Bodmin Jail Hotel; Cornwall’s most unusual hotel?
Would you stay in a former prison turned hotel, which is allegedly haunted?
If you are a fan of luxury alongside the unique and unusual, you might be interested in staying at Bodmin Jail Hotel in Cornwall. This hotel is allegedly haunted, set in a former 18th century prison, and offers an experience that blends history, luxury, and a touch of the paranormal.
I was recently given a tour around this fascinating hotel— and it turned out to be the most unusual hotel I’ve ever visited, especially in the UK!
Whether you’re into history, spooky stories, or just want a one-of-a-kind experience, Bodmin Jail Hotel offers something special. Could this be Cornwall’s most unique and intriguing hotel?
A Former Prison with a Fascinating Past
The hotelier, Tudor Hotels, has carefully converted the old prison into a modern luxurious hotel, while preserving much of its original character.
Bodmin Jail (or Gaol, as it would have been called), operated from 1779 until its closure in 1927. It housed some notorious criminals and was the site of 55 inmate hangings during its grim history. Over the years, the prison was expanded and the inmates included men, women, and even children.
In 2019, the conversion of this historic site began, and after five years of careful restoration, the 170-room hotel officially opened. The hotel has been open for the last 3 years, and it’s clear that the building has been converted with a lot of love, attention, and respect for the building’s history.
A Quiet Peace in a Historic Building
Despite its turbulent past, the hotel has a surprisingly peaceful atmosphere. The thick stone walls block out noise, and when walking down the metal staircases, it almost feels as if you’re the only person there. As I made my way through the hotel, I could hear the wind whistling through the air vents… or was it something else? The atmosphere definitely left me wondering.
Whilst I didn’t experience any ghost sightings myself, the hotel has a reputation for the paranormal. Staff have reported eerie encounters over the years, including sightings of a child ghost named “Harriet.” Whether or not you believe in the supernatural, it’s clear that the hotel’s unique history adds a layer of intrigue.

Family-Friendly Features at Bodmin Jail Hotel
The hotel’s history and atmosphere may sound more suited to thrill-seekers, you’ll be surprised that it is also family-friendly. In fact, families are the second-largest group of guests, right after couples. If you’re considering a stay with kids, here’s what you should know:
- Family Rooms: The hotel offers a variety of family rooms, though these aren’t located in the areas known for paranormal activity (just in case that’s a concern!).
- Accessible Rooms: Two accessible rooms are available for guests with mobility needs.
- Pet-Friendly: The hotel is pet-friendly on the ground floor, so you can bring your four-legged friend along.
- Kids Love It: During my stay, I saw families with young children enjoying the hotel, and overheard guests commenting on how the hotel’s historic features were “show-stopping” for kids. They’re not wrong!
Top Amenities at Bodmin Jail Hotel
Beyond the haunting allure, Bodmin Jail Hotel offers plenty of modern comforts:
- Fine Dining Restaurant: The hotel’s restaurant is a fine dining experience that has received awards for its exceptional cuisine.
- Cocktail Bar: If you enjoy a good cocktail, the bar offers a wide range of drinks, making it a perfect spot to unwind after exploring the hotel.
- Gym: There’s a fully equipped gym, air-conditioned for a comfortable workout.
- Glass Lift: One of the most fun features is the glass lift, which I think children would love – think Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!
- Plans for a Spa: I heard on the grapevine that the hotel is planning to add a swimming pool and spa – perhaps something for the future!
