(Disclosure: Our stay was gifted in collaboration with The Polurrian Hotel and Hotel FAM Club. However, this review is entirely honest and based on our genuine experience. We’ve previously visited the Polurrian for afternoon tea, which we paid for ourselves, and on this stay we also paid for our evening meal — demonstrating our commitment to providing fair, real reviews.)

Location: perfect for exploring The Lizard

The hotel is perfectly placed for visiting some of Cornwall’s top tourist spots, including:

  • Kynance Cove – often named one of the most beautiful beaches in the UK
  • The Lizard Village – mainland Britain’s most southerly point
  • Poldhu Cove – for the beautiful beach and amazing hot chocolates and cakes at Poldhu Beach cafe
  • Cadgwith Cove – a picture-perfect fishing village with thatched cottages
  • Goonhilly Downs – iconic national nature reserve and satellites
  • Roskilly’s Farm – a must-visit for ice cream lovers!
  • The hotel gardens link to the south west coast path where you can explore the Lizard and all its beautiful coves and coastline

Family facilities: buckets of fun

Families are welcomed here. From the hotel, there’s a private pathway down to the beach, ideal for summer days filled with sandcastle building and sea splashing. On-site, kids can enjoy:

  • Indoor activities room with a pool table and games
  • An outdoor play area
  • Tennis courts
  • Indoor heated pool and spa at the Health Club (slots are bookable for privacy, which makes for a more enjoyable visit)

The outdoor pool is open seasonally too, though it’s unheated — one for the brave!

Dining: great for all tastes

The Polurrian offers a varied menu with something for everyone. We had an evening meal in the Vista Lounge, a light-filled conservatory overlooking the sea. I tried the butternut squash and chipotle burger (flavourful and juicy — an underrated vegetarian option!), while my other half and our son enjoyed the classic beef burger (with a dairy-free version for our son, which was no problem at all). There was a good children’s menu available too with a lot of variety – good for the picky eaters!

We also treated ourselves to drinks:

  • I sampled the Polurrian Sling (the hotel’s signature cocktail — highly recommend!)
  • My partner tried the Morwenna beer, brewed in-house.

Breakfast was included in our stay. The setting (with sea views) was lovely. I ordered waffles and would have loved a slightly larger portion – but I do have a healthy appetite! My other half had a full English and he said he would have liked more sausages, but this is a minor point because there was a continental part to the breakfast too – its not like you would go hungry.

Note: When dining at the hotel, a discretionary service charge is added to bills. I queried this and was told it could be removed if requested. I didn’t feel pressured about this whatsoever. However, as we had excellent service, we felt it was warranted. It’s worth mentioning because not everyone likes to tip, and if you know about it you can budget in advance for your stay.

Service: friendly and thoughtful

The team at the Polurrian were welcoming and accommodating throughout our stay. When I requested a change of feather pillows (due to allergies), it was sorted immediately. They also made a ‘zed bed’ up for our son in the room at short notice. Also, when we accidentally left behind our son’s favourite teddy (“Zog”), they rescued him and kept him safe in reception for us to collect later — a small touch that meant a lot. Needless to say, I think the staff will remember us!
