The most unique places to stay in Cornwall: from treehouses to lighthouses
If you’re planning a trip to Cornwall and want somewhere a bit different to stay – here are some ideas for you. I’m talking about the weird and wonderful – converted jails, eco domes and converted towers. Places that make you say “wait, what? you can actually stay there?!”
I’m Sarah, a Cornwall-based content creator always on the lookout for quirky and family-friendly spots around the county – and this post rounds up some little gems. These are the kind of stays you’ll remember forever (and definitely want to post on Instagram).
Whether you’re booking a summer getaway, a cosy weekend, or just adding to your dream list — here are some of the most unique places to stay in Cornwall, with something for everyone.
1. Bodmin Jail Hotel, Bodmin
This is a former jail turned luxury hotel. Bodmin Jail Hotel blends sleek, modern design with eerie, historical charm. There is a beautiful glass ceiling, original features such as window openings and iron railings, a Champagne Bar and an award winning restaurant.
It’s surprisingly family-friendly, and there are several family rooms available. You can find out more about the hotel here.
Why stay: For the novelty, the history, and the moody, dramatic atmosphere. Plus, it’s dog-friendly too!
3. Ekopod, near Launceston
Want to sleep under the stars in style? Ekopod offers geodomes and safari-style tents with proper beds, wood burners, and stunning countryside views. It’s perfect for couples or families looking for an eco-friendly glamping experience.
They have a building suitable for 8 adults which would be fantastic for a group stay or a large family, and there are not many places these days that would accommodate that many people. So this is a really good find.
Why stay: Stylish, sustainable, and totally different to your average campsite.
2. Water Tower at Trelissick, near Truro
Tucked away in the woodlands at the Trelissick estate, this cylindrical tower is a hidden gem. You climb up a spiral staircase to your rooms, and from the top, you get beautiful views over the River Fal. It’s owned by the National Trust, and staying here feels like a proper off-grid escape.
Why stay: It’s quiet, quirky, and a great base for exploring gardens, riverside walks, and nearby Truro.
4. The Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage, Lizard Peninsula
Perched right on the cliffside with views across the wild Atlantic, this one’s for coastal dreamers. The cottage is part of the working Lizard Lighthouse and offers a remote, romantic retreat surrounded by sea and sky.
Why stay: That unbeatable ocean view — and the feeling of being at the edge of the world.
5. Treehouse at Kudhva, Tintagel
Kudhva means “hideout” in Cornish, and it lives up to the name. This off-grid escape has futuristic pods, wild swimming spots, and a treehouse you can actually sleep in. It’s all about reconnecting with nature and stepping off the grid. A truly unique stay.
Why stay: For the adventure, the architecture, and the total digital detox.
